The House of Representatives has passed the Bill for the
establishment of the National Climate Change Commission. This is the second
time the House is passing the Bill after the harmonised version that was sent
to President Goodluck Jonathan was not assented to before the expiration of the
last Assembly.
A statement by the advisor, Nigerian Youth Climate Action
Network (NYCAN), Hamzat Bala Lawal, explained that the “bill seeks to give the
commission the task of regulating and coordinating policies and actions on
climate change in the country.”
“We welcome this development as Nigeria will be joining the
rest of the world in Brazil to discuss strategies of promoting green economy
and sustainable development.” We also commend the House commitment in setting
up a strong institution to coordinate the multifaceted nature of climate change
governance. This will protect the future of the younger generations because the
youth are going to bear the greater brunt of the effects of climate change if
not adequately addressed,” it stated.
However, the NYCAN called on the Senate to also pass the
bill on climate change like they did in 2010 and urged every stakeholder to
support the move for a green economy.
